May 21, 1986: My Adoption Day

Last October, I made a plan to spend my Sunday evenings scanning old family pictures for posterity (and a blog series). But, life kicked in, and free weekend hours were few and far between. With a rare quiet evening tonight, it seemed like an opportune moment to restart my project. And what better place to start than the very beginning? In my case, “the beginning” was May 21st, 1986… the day I flew from Seoul to Chicago O’Hare International Airport and arrived in the loving arms of my mom and dad.

I watch the video of this day every year on May 21st. It’s difficult for me to replay it too often and see my loved ones who are no longer with us. The memories of my adoption day are priceless, and one of the reasons I am drawn to photography. Pictures are powerful. No matter where I am in life or what hardships I’m facing, seeing my infant self surrounded by love and family is the ultimate reminder of what really matters.
