Diversity Chic: Gingham Style

Diversity Chic: Gingham Style | Stephanie Drenka

It wasn’t until I sat down to write this post that I realized just how perfect this month’s trend was for us. Plaid. A pattern that literally comes in every size, shape, and color imaginable. For the sake of having some sort of coordination for the photos, we decided to narrow down the plaid trend further and focus specifically on gingham.

“What’s the difference between plaid and gingham?” I asked my fabric-loving headwear-designing husband. He explained it to me as simply as he could (before he started spouting off all the other kinds of plaid, buffalo, windowpane, etc…)

It’s like the rectangle/square relationship– gingham is a type of plaid, but not all plaid is gingham. Gingham is white plus another color, whereas plaid can be any combination of colors. The lines in gingham also have the same width, and other plaid lines can vary in size.

The funny/amazing thing is that even within the gingham family, there is still room for diversity. Just look at the different ways Valery, Sevi, Jordan and I styled our gingham! I love how classic this pattern is. It was only fitting to choose a backdrop equally as such. Thanks to Tom’s Burgers & Grill for providing this perfect retro location for our shoot (and delicious burgers, which Holden and I decided to partake in after we wrapped)!

Ever since my stylist friend Dionne helped me purge my closet recently, I’ve been very intentional about new wardrobe purchases. My style has always been pretty minimal (a result of being raised by a mother whose closet consists of 95% black and white pieces). I’ll get caught up in trends, patterns, and colors– but I always end up falling back on the classics.

Another criteria when shopping for clothes these days is whether I can wear it while I’m doing a shoot. Since I work from home, going out to photograph bloggers is pretty much the only time I get out of my pajamas! So I’ve been looking for comfortable, cool pieces that are long enough to kneel down in for detail shots.

This midi-length gingham shirtdress from Forever 21 not only fit the bill, but also has a slit up the side to add a fun, flirty touch. The dress has been on repeat for more times than I care to admit. Possibly my favorite purchase of the summer, and will easily transition to fall. (I can’t wait to style it with a faux leather moto jacket!)

Need some more ideas on how to incorporate gingham into your wardrobe? Check out the ways that each of my fabulous fellow-Diversity Chic ladies Valery, Sevi, and Jordan styled theirs.

Cheers to another successful Diversity Chic! (And thanks for the refreshing Cokes, Jordan ^.^)
