Flashback Friday // Henry & June | Stephanie Drenka

For today’s #flashbackfriday inspired feature, I explored the depths of Wayback Machine’s archives to find this post dated May 22, 2012 from my blog, Korean Bohemian. ???? Let’s take a trip back in time to my very first “fashion blogger” outfit shoot. Poor Holden had no idea what he was getting himself into when I asked him to be my beau-tographer.

It’s amusing to look back at my humble beginnings as a baby blogger — I’m pretty impressed that I’ve stayed (mostly) committed to blogging for more than 4 years (not including my personal online journaling days in high school/college). There are times when I find myself discouraged with this blog, especially when it comes to monetization, but then I look back at these times when I had so much fun just exploring, practicing photography, and documenting life– without even the inkling of profit. It puts things back into perspective for me. Thank you for indulging my #fbf nostalgia! Hope you enjoy this glimpse into the past…

Do not seek the because – in love there is no because, no reason, no explanation, no solutions. (Anaïs Nin, Henry and June)

In Dallas, we have been having the perfect weather in the evenings. The “Magic Hour” (as it is often referred to by photographers) right before sunset is the best time to wander outdoors.

My boyfriend, Holden, and I took a stroll through my apartment complex, where I discovered a lovely bench where I could enjoy my summer reading.

Lately, everyone has been talking about (or not, but discreetly purchasing on their eReader) Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. I have not yet jumped on the bandwagon, mostly because I find it hard to wrap my mind around the idea of Twilight fan fiction finding its way to the #1 spot on the New York Times Bestseller’s List.

Instead, Anaïs Nin’s unexpurgated journal, Henry and June, is my literary opiate of choice. Nothing is more intimate than reading a woman’s diary. Nin’s writing is poignant–mesmerizing, even– and almost painfully authentic.

Many of my favorite inspirational quotes were said/written by her. The ultimate being, “and the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.”

Reading her words is not unlike wearing a flowing maxi dress during the inaugural days of summer– makes me want to float and twirl until breathlessness and vertigo re-ground me.
