It’s been nearly a year since we sold our house and moved into the loft. What a difference that year has made. We first moved into this building so I could be closer to work. Only a few months later, I decided to leave the organization and start a business. Our new home became my office and where I spend the majority of my time. As the end of our lease approaches, we had to decide whether or not to buy again or stay here. Our amazing(ly patient) realtor, Abe, took us on a whirlwind search of houses for sale, but none of them felt right.
Over time, I’ve realized that my life has never been cookie cutter. Adoption set me on a course for uncertainty and never fully feeling like I belong anywhere. Part of me wondered whether buying again would make me feel more settled. But, the truth is: I feel more at home in this loft than I ever did in our old house. This space gave me the motivation to pursue my dreams, freedom to leave an environment that had become toxic to my well-being, and room to breathe again.
Everything we love- from Holden’s dinosaur memorabilia to my array of vintage cameras – is visible from nearly any angle in the apartment. Even though we don’t own this place, there are traces of our lives everywhere. The living room is a perfect representation of that.
This cozy corner is filled with keepsakes from our loved ones. Trinkets from Holden’s grandparents and framed photos of mine line the bookshelves. My mom’s piano – that I learned to play on – is here for when I need to drown out the world and get lost in song for awhile. On a similar note (pun intended), the record player Holden gave me as a gift sits atop an antique trunk filled with his comic book collection. At the center of it all is a beautiful cocktail table from Holly & Martin that keeps inspiration with arm’s reach. It has a built-in magazine shelf and glass display, so I can store some of my favorite photography books in case I get stuck in a creative rut.
The living room is probably my favorite spot in the entire loft. The puppies are always perched nearby on top of a chair or the couch. Everything I need is close at hand. Holden and I spend most of our evenings watching TV and movies together in our comfy green chairs. And the downtown Dallas views definitely don’t hurt either. They say home is where the heart is. This is the heart of our home.
