Lucky 33

“You have to embrace getting older. Life is precious and when you’ve lost a lot of people, you realize that each day is a gift.” (Meryl Streep)

Yesterday was my 33rd birthday and a slight comedy of errors. Best laid plans fell to the wayside, and my anxiety-ridden self nearly had a panic attack trying to pick up the pieces. When I dropped my phone- shattering the glass screen- on the way to lunch, this feeling of dread washed over me.

It wasn’t the broken phone, per se… it was the weight of another year gone by, fear of the unknown, and realization that no matter how many times I tell myself optimistically, “this is your year,” nothing is really in my control. But what I’ve learned over the past three decades (and three years), is that life does have a way of balancing itself out.

After re-arranging birthday plans to get my phone fixed at the Apple store, I serendipitously had the chance to catch up with an old friend from high school who was working there. Being technology-free for an hour or so while it was repaired forced me to stop working, catch my breath, and enjoy a drink with my husband.
The day ended at a hockey game with my sweet parents, who snuck in a bundt cake to celebrate. I “blew out” my (unlit) candle, and wished for a victory for our home team. They won 5 to 4, and I fell asleep thanking my lucky Stars.
