Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities and Belk Give Back

Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities and Belk Give Back | Stephanie Drenka

One thing I love most about Belk (besides the awesome merchandise and fabulous events) is that their heart is really with the local community. Those of you who don’t live in Texas may not be aware that last weekend was “Tax-Free” weekend here. Hoards of parents and students stocking up on supplies and fashions, taking advantage of no-taxes for a few days. Sometimes, amidst the craziness of back-to-school season, we overlook those students whose families are struggling to afford the basic items we take for granted.

Belk, committed to making their local communities stronger, provides educational assistance to students as part of their philanthropic efforts. This year, they joined Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, one of their Dallas community partners, to provide free school uniforms to hundreds of Dallas ISD students. DISD students are required each year to wear uniforms, but oftentimes families do not have the funds for this purchase.

Last Thursday, August 7th, Belk and Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities donated required uniform items to more than 400 students from Onesimo Hernandez Elementary School.

During the fun giveaway event, which included snacks and a live DJ, the school’s gym was transformed into a back-to-school pop-up shop where students were able to receive their shirts, blouses, pants, skirts, belts and socks.

Pat and Emmitt Smith spoke to students and parents about the importance of education and staying in school, while Belk associates and event volunteers assisted the students in picking out their new uniforms.

Special guests in attendance at the event included Senator Royce West (Texas Senator, District 23), Dr. Liliana Valadez (DISD Executive Director, Division 3) and Miguel Solis (DISD Board of Trustees President).

Thank you to Belk, along with Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, for your benevolent hearts and continually setting a wonderful example for the local Dallas communities!
