The Importance of Making Plans

“Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all is a form of planning.”

– Gloria Steinem

Sometimes, I go dark.

And I don’t just mean like my goth phase in high school- where I painted my nails black, wore skull rings, and listened to Disturbed’s “Down With the Sickness” on repeat.

I go quiet. Silent. Hide. Avoid.

Get lost in a maze of inner dialogue and Socratic questioning, forgetting my way home.

Everything is pitch black, so I can’t see that I’m even in a tunnel- let alone the light at the end of it.

These are dark days.

The world is burning, and I feel extinguished.

But no matter what state my head is in, my heart always knows to keep pumping blood- because there is still work to be done.

And so, I plan.

I know the saying — “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”

It’s not the plans that matter so much as the planning.

A reminder that no matter how bleak life may seem, it is still that…

LIFE.

And though there may be people in this country who don’t believe mine has value, I’m here regardless.

I have things to look forward to, tasks that need completion, places to visit, and time – though, not guaranteed – to cherish.

It helps hold me accountable for taking care of myself.
