Sailor Moon Crystal Premieres

Sailor Moon Crystal Premieres | Stephanie Drenka

Besides my swift-handed Super Mario Bros. 3 skills, the obsession I had with Sailor Moon during childhood was probably one of the earliest signs of my future “geek” identity. It was also my first introduction to Asian pop culture. My friends and I each claimed Sailor scouts as our own– mine was bookworm Sailor Mercury. I loved that she was unapologetically nerdy, sensible, and an introvert. Although, I always wanted to “look” like Sailor Mars.

My interest in Sailor Moon waned when I moved to Texas and struggled to fit into my new surroundings. It seems like the rebooted show has come full circle with me. I’m finally in a place where I celebrate the things that I used to keep to myself for fear of being judged as a geek or nerd. I married a man who, despite his Abercrombie looks, loved the Sailor Moon franchise (almost) as much as I did. We’re watching the first episode together now. Only into the opening credits, but the smile on my face is just ridiculous. Have you seen it yet?? If not, catch it on Hulu below.
