Dallas City Council was hoping for business as usual at today’s meeting, but we refused to let them normalize injustice. As a community leader expressed concerns over Botham Jean’s death, Mayor Rawlings interrupted him to call a recess and walk out. It was a telling moment about his leadership and the collective conscience of our elected officials. I fear that routine and protocol have become excuses for indifference. Eventually, remaining city council members voted to allow the community to speak. Time will tell if their truth fell on deaf ears.
