Stop and Smell the Roses

Although I’m a huge proponent of mindfulness and self-care, I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t do the best job at practicing these things myself sometimes. “The Cult of Busy” is a real thing, and I have to think twice before answering inquiries about how things are going with the phrase “I’ve been busy.” It’s all about balance.

I did have a work function this morning, but instead of coming home feeling exhausted and sleeping through the rest of the day, I mustered up some extra energy, threw on a breezy maxi dress, and went with my husband to literally stop and smell the roses. With all the time I spend commuting to, from, and within Dallas, it’s important that I enjoy moments whenever possible here at home.

“You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.” (Walter Hagen)

The Rose Garden of Farmers Branch is one of my very favorites spots in town, and I drive by too often without stopping. There is only a brief window of time when the flowers are in full bloom like this, so I wanted to savor each second. I’d like to encourage anyone reading this to spend the weekend stopping to smell your roses, whatever that may be — time with your family, moments of quiet solitude — give yourself time, because no one else will. I promise the world will still be waiting after you exhale.
