Year of the #Girlboss

Year of the #Girlboss | Stephanie Drenka

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

When I first started my blog in January of 2013, my goals for it were simple. Proudly embrace my nerdy side and find a way to incorporate it into a fashion style, explore Dallas more, and meet new bloggers. Blogs have always been something that come and go for me. Before Geek Glam, they were merely projects whose name, layout, content would eventually bore me.

After Holden proposed to me two years ago, this blog almost went the way of those previous ones. I got caught up in wedding planning, house hunting, and the search for my birth family– outfit posts and gaming reviews seemed of such little consequence. When we returned from the honeymoon, I considered converting our wedding website into a new lifestyle blog. Holden talked sense into me, and I realized that the blogs were not the problem– it was me. They could never reach their potential if my heart wasn’t fully in them. After that epiphany, blogging soon transformed from a chore to a joy.

2014 has been a transformative year, to say the least. I touched on it briefly back in my Thanksgiving post (I get sappy around holidays). The friends I’ve made through this blog have forever changed my life. I love waking up in the morning with the anticipation of talking to them and being inspired by their creativity and passion. They have helped see me through intense struggles and come to understand that taking care of and believing in yourself is not selfish. For all the people in your life that don’t care or are just downright nasty to you, there are just as many, if not more, that want to support you and celebrate your journeys together. Cherish the latter.

Working for a small business, I find myself constantly in awe of my bosses. They are role models, pillars of the community, and care more about people than profit– something that was so unfamiliar to me in my previous workplace. As someone who always imagined themselves in a corporate setting, I don’t know if I could ever go back now. There is just so much goodness in investing in your dream and being there to see it through. After helping my husband grow his vinyl toy company, I decided to try my hand at entrepreneurship. I have been blown away by the support I’ve received in just two short months since starting my side photography business. I know I could never have found the courage to start it without the collective encouragement of my loved ones.

I am so proud of my friends. It’s been an amazing year full of new jobs, ventures, and milestones. I feel incredibly lucky to have people in my life with similar values and determination. My plan for 2015 is to take the lessons that I’ve learned this year about following your passion and surrounding yourself with people who believe in your dreams as much as you do and achieve my goals with an open heart and unapologetic tenacity. And to invest time and energy not only in my own pursuits, but those of the friends and family who’ve done the same for me. This year has ended on such a high note and what makes me even more content is knowing that it’s only the beginning. Dream on.
