A Little Night Magic

We received complimentary tickets and food/beverage for purposes of this post. All opinions are my own.

“A little magic can take you a long way.” (Roald Dahl)

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, it seems fitting to share one of my all-time favorite date nights. Last month, Holden and I enjoyed an evening of “Wine & Magic” c/o magician Trigg Watson and Checkered Past Winery.

Last year, Trigg helped out with one of Big Thought’s youth development programs — creating a show-stopping illusion for their devised play. I’ve been wanting to check out Trigg’s show ever since.

Wine & Magic is an intimate magic show with only 45 tickets available each performance. Paired with the delicious food and drinks from Checkered Past Winery, it’s a wonderful date option, girl’s night out, or just much-needed escape from reality after a long week.

Since moving into South Side on Lamar, Checkered Past has quickly become my go-to spot for drinks with friends, brunch church (yes, that’s a thing!), and dinner with Holden.

We were treated to a preview of their special Valentine’s Day menu, which will be available during this weekend’s Wine & Magic performances.

The menu includes:
Champagne Flight
Bellisima Cheese & Charcuterie Board
Lovers Flatbread Pizza
Chocolate Petit Four Dessert

Trigg’s illusions were mindboggling and magical. He also had us laughing out loud with his (sometimes self-deprecating) humor. I’m not a magic aficionado, by any means. I don’t know how to describe Trigg’s style except… you should see it to believe it.

What I do know and appreciate, is a good storyteller. Interwoven through Trigg’s tricks were heartfelt anecdotes about his family, childhood, and influences. His love for magic poured out of these stories and made it clear that Trigg is living his passion. The show was inspirational as it was entertaining.

If you’re in search of the perfect Valentine’s (or Galentine’s) plans, there will be three Wine & Magic performances at Checkered Past this weekend:

  • Friday, February 15 at 7pm
  • Saturday, February 16 at 7pm
  • Saturday, February 16 at 9:30pm

Seating is limited– click here to reserve seats.

From Political Pawns to Punchlines: Leave Adoptees From Political Pawns to Punchlines: Leave Adoptees Out of Your Abortion Arguments (and Memes)

"We will adopt your baby" posts went viral on Twitter only days after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Unsettling photos of nightmarish couples were shared en masse, mocking the White hopeful adoptive parents who posed with protest signs bearing the phrase in celebration of the ruling. Advocates from both sides of the abortion debate are quick to invoke adoption to support their views, but neither group seems interested in the experiences of those most impacted- adoptees.

Whether intended as jest or otherwise, snarky quips prodding anti-abortion advocates to foster or adopt as a test of their “pro-life” commitment are misguided and uninformed. This irresponsible argument demonstrates a striking lack of sympathy for the children they would see placed in such dangerous hands and a fundamental misunderstanding about the adoption and foster care systems.

Three of the conservative Supreme Court justices who voted to uphold Mississippi’s abortion ban are adoptive parents. Many people who prayed for the end of legalized abortion are the same ones carrying the “We will adopt your baby” posters. The practice of adoption goes hand in hand with colonialism and White Supremacy or saviorism—undergirded by the belief that parents of color are less qualified or deserving of a chance to raise their children.

Adoptee voices matter, and they could help dismantle a broken system. Please spend time listening to our experiences and learning more about the history of the adoption industrial complex, family separation, and lifelong adoptee trauma. Read between the memes, and you will find our stories.
