In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, it seems fitting to share one of my all-time favorite date nights. Last month, Holden and I enjoyed an evening of “Wine & Magic” c/o magician Trigg Watson and Checkered Past Winery.
Last year, Trigg helped out with one of Big Thought’s youth development programs — creating a show-stopping illusion for their devised play. I’ve been wanting to check out Trigg’s show ever since.
Wine & Magic is an intimate magic show with only 45 tickets available each performance. Paired with the delicious food and drinks from Checkered Past Winery, it’s a wonderful date option, girl’s night out, or just much-needed escape from reality after a long week.
Since moving into South Side on Lamar, Checkered Past has quickly become my go-to spot for drinks with friends, brunch church (yes, that’s a thing!), and dinner with Holden.
We were treated to a preview of their special Valentine’s Day menu, which will be available during this weekend’s Wine & Magic performances.

Champagne Flight
Bellisima Cheese & Charcuterie Board
Lovers Flatbread Pizza
Chocolate Petit Four Dessert
Trigg’s illusions were mindboggling and magical. He also had us laughing out loud with his (sometimes self-deprecating) humor. I’m not a magic aficionado, by any means. I don’t know how to describe Trigg’s style except… you should see it to believe it.
What I do know and appreciate, is a good storyteller. Interwoven through Trigg’s tricks were heartfelt anecdotes about his family, childhood, and influences. His love for magic poured out of these stories and made it clear that Trigg is living his passion. The show was inspirational as it was entertaining.
