Home Office Tour

Tuesday, February 9, 2021 · In: Home Decor

Today’s post is a tour of my home office. But the room is so much more than that. It is a haven. My oasis, this tapestry of broken dreams woven together with a thread of magical thinking. An unmistakable reminder that sometimes the most beautiful things can manifest after all your best laid plans seem ruined.

Embrace the unexpected.

I didn’t expect to be a divorcée or living by myself again in a new apartment. And even though I’ve worked from home before, nothing could have prepared me for this inordinate amount of alone time. But in this space I’ve curated, I no longer feel lonely.

Resting on masterfully-assembled (not by me) IKEA Billy Bookcases, so many of my favorite things are finally settled. Everything has its place and purpose. Novels for inspiration. Tools for creativity. Bags and shoes for frivolity. An accumulation of a full life. Sometimes I forget that it’s mine.

Photos of incredible locations I’ve visited and people I love cover an otherwise empty wall- memories to cherish until it’s safe to make new ones. Dried pampas grass sits in the corner, transporting me back to Jeju Island with my sister. I bought a gold sequined dress for New Year’s Eve plans that never happened, but seeing it hanging on the clothes rack makes even a gloomy day feel like an occasion.

A blush pink color scheme fit for my new bachelorette lifestyle. Every detail unapologetically me.

The room is multifunctional. With a few minor adjustments, it can turn into a workout area, meditation space, dressing room, or reading nook. This is more than a place for Zoom calls. It’s where I will write. Imagine. Dream. Connect. Create. Rebuild. Heal.

Welcome.

UPDATE: Made some changes to this space after realizing how much of life would be spent working virtually for the indefinite future. Invested in a Flexispot adjustable standing desk and folding treadmill as well as moving my desk area to the window (gotta have that natural light on Zoom calls).

Thank you, Teia! This room is actually supposed to be the master bedroom, but when I saw the natural light- I knew it needed to be my office.

From the moment we started working at rewardStyle From the moment we started working at rewardStyle together, I knew @rachael.loerwald was a visionary. I've dreamed about hiring her to design something for me ever since she launched her business, @studio.foray.

When I decided to start the Dallas Asian American Historical Society with @digital.denise, I knew Rachael would help make sense of all the scattered ideas in my head and turn it into a cohesive brand.

How do you make an organization about *history* feel modern? Honor tradition, but appeal to new audiences? Make research chic?

To say she accomplished this would be an understatement. She went beyond the call of duty (and friendship) to create something that brought me to tears.

It feels so real now. Possible. A legacy. Something beautiful, timeless, and authentic. What our community has always deserved.

We're ready to tell our stories. Follow us at @dallasasianhistory.

But... I'm SO excited to see what transformative ideas the next person in this role brings! And hopefully have a chance to work alongside them before my last day on April 29th.
