Hitting the Reset Button

Thursday, February 8, 2018 · In: Home Decor, Life

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” (Theodore Roosevelt)

While my blog has gone relatively quiet these past few months, offline life has been a bit of a rollercoaster. The new year and another January Whole30 couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. Having some semblance of consistency (even if it was only during mealtime) was a blessing. After a successful 30 day reset, it was time to do the same for the other aspects of my life.

Our house was slowly starting to morph into a manifestation of my internal chaos. I let things pile up, which only exacerbated my anxiety. Both my mind and physical space needed some serious de-cluttering.

Adulthood is when your husband asks what you want to do for your 32nd birthday, and the answer is “go to The Container Store” to buy home organization supplies… Even though the whole house is overdue for some serious re-organization, I decided to start small in the areas where it would have the most impact.

Mornings have become my time for mindfulness. During this year’s Whole30, I started drinking coffee regularly for the first time. My new favorite treat is mixing Nutpods and Collagen Peptides in a cup of it and enjoying an hour or so of quiet time before getting ready for work. I decided to turn this shelving area in our kitchen dining space into a coffee bar.

After pouring a cup of coffee, I move into the guest room (aka my closet/office) to get ready for work. My capsule wardrobe helps make picking out what to wear an easier task. I spent some time this week paring down the clothing rack to my everyday favorites.
I de-cluttered my makeup collection- tossing expired products and setting up the rest in acrylic organizers. I created a makeshift vanity with an IKEA bookshelf and round mirror from Target. This cozy corner lets me get ready while watching some feel-good T.V. shows (like Gilmore Girls) which keeps me out of my head for a little bit.
These changes might seem relatively small, but they have already improved my daily routine. I am more focused and confident when I’ve had this time to myself in the morning. The rest of my day feels increasingly productive, and I have additional capacity and motivation after work to tackle other parts of the house.
What are your favorite home organization, storage tips, and products? I’m hoping to overhaul the kitchen next!

It all looks so good Stephanie! I keep my makeup in similar drawers like yours. My current work hours at my job begin at 11:30 so I have my mornings to myself- I love taking time in the mornings to enjoy tea, a TV show, work on the blog, and take some me-time for myself before my work day begins. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve really gotten accustomed to having my mornings and it sounds like you’re enjoying yours, too!

I love it. I am taking notes. I need to do a de-clutter myself.
